So I had an incredibly good stroke of luck today – Lt. Gen. Stultz, the Commanding General of the Army Reserve -  did a “Town Hall” meeting today on my base, and my Puplic Affairs Officer (also an IRR soldier) let me know, and we went with the intent of getting some answers about what’s going to happen to us when we meet our Mandatory Service Obligation – the eight years I signed up for.

Part One: A brief history of my military service.

I was twenty years old and worked for a small dot-com outside of St. Louis, Missouri when two planes crashed into the World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon, and one crashing before ever reaching a target.  I sat with the rest of the United States watching the world change.  We didn’t know that everything had changed – all we knew was that we were scared.

Yeah, so we had a “health and welfare” inspection today.*  I’ll list out all the slightly awkward and hilarious shit that my First Sergeant listed out as deficiencies.  We’re not correcting them not because we disagree, but because we’re fucking dipshits and don’t care.  YOU asked for ME to come back remember – leave me alone and I’ll make your magic voodoo boxes** work and we’ll all be happy.

Mike is my closest friend.  I’ve known him since the 6th grade when my Mom and I moved out to St. Peters, Missouri.  Until early in the 10th Grade when I left school we were pretty much inseperable – we were at each others house daily, causing some sort of hell for my folks or his.
